Redesign of Umi’s main home page screen, focusing on gamification of main screens and progress tracking. Additionally conducted user A/B testing to get design feedback.
Umi is a Language Learning App:
Their target market is largely teenagers and young adults, but mainly targeting anime lovers. They focus on video clips for retained learning and wanted to focus on progress.
I found a solution to their problem, why not make it like a game?
•Added progress bar for each unit
•Made gamified design visuals and added Umi’s mascot into page
•Refined design for professional feel and prevented errors
From there, I pivoted. How can I make this more engaging for users?
I communicated with the stakeholders about these changes, and they loved it.
•Adding gamification
•Indicating progress from the start
•Mixing in fun elements and design
I Then Used This Data to Further Revise the Product.
• Focused on easily accessible nodes
•Experience bars to track users progress
•Refining visual design
•Making strong indicators to users of finished, in progress, and not done
Reflection
This was my first UI design project, and I learned a lot that user interface design has a lot of factors into what makes it successful for users.

My biggest pitfall was not conducting user research earlier and only receiving input from the stakeholders. Users are the most important part that makes a business successful, it's crucial to address their problems as quickly as possible.
