About the Sculpture
'Umeke Lāʻau: Culture Medicine is a sculptural calabash symbolizing care and cultural practice, was created with Team 'Umeke.
How do we incorporate the importance of Hawaiian culture & healing in a modern form?
Added textures of:
1) petitions from Native Hawaiians protesting the annexation of Hawai'i
2) texture of the 'umeke la'au
I also chose a typeface that had a traditional feel, while still incorporating modern elements.
The colors blue and brown signify the sea and land, as well as with topics that are big issues in Hawai'i.
Reflection
It was a great honor to create the branding and promotion material for this exhibition artist at the HT '25 Triennial and reconnect with Hawaiian culture as a someone born and raised in Hawai'i. Along with this, it challenged the way I think about form and how people can connect through it.
